Age Ratings BBFC

To make sure our film is appropriate to be produced, we had to decide on a valid age rating using the BBFC website - www.bbfc.co.uk - to use. We know that our film wouldn't be anything below a 15,

and nothing over an 18, so we both decided to look at the guidelines of both to find which one best suited our film.

15
The guidelines on the website:

• Must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour
• Must not promote or encourage drug misuse
• No sadistic or sexualised horror
• Should not dwell on detail of dangerous behaviour or easily accessible weapons
• No aggressive or repetitive use of the strongest language
• No strong detail on nudity or sexual activity
• No dwell on the infliction of pain or injury – violence may be strong but should not dwell on detail

18
The guidelines for 18 age rating are less restricted, and most things are acceptable (for example, criminal offences, risk or harm to individuals, detail of infliction of pain, injury, strong language, dangerous behaviour, accessible weapons, sadistic or sexualised horror and drug use) – however, this rating restricts the use of explicit sexual activity.

We think that the rating that is best for our film is 15 because it would suit our primary audience well, and attract a younger audience that we want – 15 to 25 years. Our film also fits the guidelines, and isn’t as extreme as what would be permitted for an 18 film, so there was no need for that rating. Our film is not going to include any drug misuse, sexualised horror, discriminatory behaviour, aggressive/repetitive use of strong language, or nudity/sexual activity. When filming, we are also going to make sure we don’t dwell on detail of dangerous behaviour or the weapons we will use, and not show detail of the infliction of pain or injury when showing the violence.

Film Title Ideas and Final Decision - 17/10/11

This is a presentation of our decisions we made to get to our final choice of what we are going to call our film. We used the software Prezi - http://www.prezi.com/ - to show our ideas as we thought this was the easiest and most creative way.

WHY HAVE WE DONE THIS?

We chose to come up with 4 different examples of possible titles for our film first so that we could get our own opinions and ideas across, and then we narrowed it down to our two most favourite, and then finally our favourite which we have chosen to keep. We presented this using this software because it is an easy way of viewing all of our findings.

Action plan 3

Week 3
This week I am going to analyse one more film openining. So far i have got The messengers as our famous genre fitting film, and Con air as the cotempary film. I have chosen Dorian Gray as the British Genre fitting film to analyse. This week we will be also creating our logo for our film company on Pixlr.com, and also creating a film title and logo and how it will move about the screen.  We need to also start location scouting and taking pictures of possible locations we are going to use. We are going to start storyboaring our film, for a first draft. The last thing is to Brainstorm our Title for our film.

Our Finished Media Film Opening presentation

Voki Main Character

This is my Voki For my Main Character Steven Turner. He gives you a brief insight into his mind and what his plans are for the town. This gives you a better understanding of what he will look like as you wont see much of him in our opening as it is fast paced.

The Messengers Film Opening Analysis

This is the opening to a film The Messengers. Its the thriller/Horror Film that we are going to draw inspiration from. The effect is in black and white which we are going to have and the similar credits show how we are going to have our opening. The first 2-3 minutes are what we are going to base our background of our scene on. This uses the same institution of Columbia that we are going to use which helps when coming to analyse why we are going to use Columbia. When working and filming our finished piece we will be looking closley at the effects they use on this clip to help with our idea basis.

This is the Messengers Video Part 1 from Youtube.com

Below are 9 Key frames from the 3 minute clip to show what the opening is about.

Con Air Film Opening Analysis

Film opening Con Air:
First thing that comes up is the institution and film company names – touchstone pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer films – This appears with mysterious music then changes into the war video that is shown. This is clearly old footage because of the quality of the images. It shows a war field and a man commentating about war heroes that have been in the battlefield before and are being discharged with medals. Close up of a certain soldier saluting which then connotes to the audience that he is going to be a main character in the film. The mood of the film then quickly changes as the location changes with an establishing shot of the dock, and romantic music. They use continuality editing as he walks from the boat to the bar and inside the bar. His uniform shows that he was the soldier in the clip at the beginning, and the size of his bag and the reaction when they meet show that they haven’t seen each other in quite a while, and their kiss shows they are romantically involved. The lyrics in the song relate to their relationship with the romantic feel to it. A lot of jump cut’s to different location. Side shots as they talk to each other. As the new character comes into the scene over the shoulder shots are used during the conversation. In the scene the other couples dancing show that the song is very romantic for a slow song. The lighting is well lit on the main characters in the scene and dark in the rest of the places as it is a bar at night-time. The vodka and beer signs show they sell a lot of alcohol and the men at the bar show it’s a mans bar. Lots of close ups and mid shots of the characters to show their facial expressions. The two men both wearing dark green and the lady is wearing a bright colour with her bright hair which makes her stand out more as a character.

Preliminary Exercise Pictures

On Wednesday 12th October we completed filming our Preliminary Exercise. I worked in a group with Tayla Powell -http://taylaastleyasmedia.blogspot.com/-, Emma Gower -http://astleyemmaasmedia.blogspot.com/-, and Chloe King -http://chloeastleyasmedia.blogspot.com/-.
For the task we had to have a storyboard and a recorded exercise of a 30 second sequence of someone walking through a door sitting down talking to another person then getting up and leaving. We had to choose a story board so we chose Emma's because it was the most simplest storyboard and the most detailed. The storyboard consisted of someone walking towards, opening and through a door, then sitting down, exchanging a brief conversation with another person sitting down also, and then both of them getting up and leaving the room. we used a good range of camera angles, Camera shots and zoom techniques. Camera Angles used were High angles, Point of view angles and Over the shoulder angles. The Camera shots used were Master shot, close up, and Medium two shot.
Overall this was a successful task and we all worked together as a group and took it in turns to film, act and direct, so we all have shots of us doing separate things. we were able to come to quick decision and we all helped each other with different ideas. Below are some shots of us recording and acting throughout the exercise, and also the finished Preliminary Exercise.

Twisted Pictures & Columbia Logo's

We intend to use the following Institutions in our film opening. Here is a deep analysis of the company's and their logos.

Twisted Pictures logo
Twisted Pictures is a Film production company that make films that are specifically in horror genre. The company was started in 2004 by Evolution Entertainment’s Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Gregg Hoffman. The company is very successful in the 21st century and they make films today such as Saw, Mother’s Day, Dead Silence and Catacombs. The company’s most iconic film is Saw which then made 6 sequels. They then worked with the same makers of Saw to create Dead silence.

The Twisted Pictures logo is the name of the company written in big bold white writing which had cracks in each letter to make it look spooky to reflect the genre. The font is cut out as it fades out towards the bottom to make it look like mist on a cloudy day. The logo is then twisted around the trunk in the middle like it is being strangled which again reflects the genre. The trunk rips through out the title and leaves to cut into pieces. This represents the type of genre they produce which reflects into our own genre.

Columbia Logo

Columbia is an American film production company. Sony Pictures Entertainment owns this company but was founded by the name “Columbia.” The films they produce normally have a high-budget and are usually very successful and worldwide. The most famous films they have made are The Pursuit of Happiness, 50 First Dates, The karate Kid and The Grudge. They have a range of different genres and have so far filmed all the main genres.

The logo of Columbia is a lady carrying a torch and wrapped around in an American flag, which represents the state Columbia. The logo design has had 5 changes to what it looks like now. The lady in the picture is holding a torch which sends out rays of light like the sun, it gives of the same symbol as the statue of liberty, which then could represent how important the company is in the film industry. The logo lasts around 25 seconds and the music is very loud and dramatic like an orchestra. This music could represent the of how important they think their company is. As soon as this music starts, the screen is filled with light which is then zoomed out from her torch to show the whole scene of her standing on a podium in her dress with the bold letters “Columbia” in a 3D font which stands out and then fades into the background.

Action plan 2

Week 2
This week we will be filiming our Preliminary exercise. We have storyboarded each of our preliminary exercises that we are going to film and then we will finally film and use in camera editing. We have to film it for 30 seconds and then play back.
We need to finalise our storyline and figure out what props and characters we are going to have in the film. Alos locations that we are going to check out and costumes and people that we are going to have as the characters.
Im going to analyse the film company of columbia and Emma is going to analyse Twisted pictures as these are the two film institutions that we are going to use in our film.

StoryBoard Preliminary

This is my storyboards for my preliminary exercise. I was in a group with Emma gower, Tayla Powell and Chloe King. We filmed a short 30 second exercise of someone walking through a door sitting down and talking to someone. Below each picture is how we are going to use the shots and what is going to be in the scene.

Action Plans

Week 1
We are going to discuss ideas that we are going to finally film as our film opening. we have decided on the genre on horror/thriller so we will research closely into these genres and analyse a varied amount of film openings.
The opening of the messengers film is a good opening that we are planning to use as inspiration and i am going to analyse in a few weeks.
We need to brainstorm ideas properly in a word cloud to get an idea of what our film is going to be about and to get a clear storyline.
The more film openings that we are going to analyse the better it is for when we come to brainstorm our own ideas, and film our opening. we are going to study the camera angles and practise on techniques that we are going to use so that we don't become stuck when we film.
